Tracking and preventing hearing loss in high noise for industrial workers - all without losing situational awareness.

The Challenge

A large amount of hearing loss in adults is due to continuous exposure to high noise levels. How can we protect workers in high noise, and often dangerous industrial environments, without removing their situational awareness?

The Outcome

A multi year approach - working with the internal hardware, software, marketing, sales and executive team - resulting in purpose designed & specialised products that would enable workers to protect their hearing whilst maintaining awareness of their environment at a safe noise level; all whilst enabling compliance officers to record and monitor their workers environmental and heard noise levels through the PEAK digital web app platform.

EAve FOCUS Lite

The EAVE Focus Lite was the second generation of smart ear defenders that took the learnings from the MKI (designed as a minimum viable product and shown further down the page) and implemented them into a lighter, smaller, more comfortable and simpler to use product that could be worn alone or with a helmet.

The Focus Lite provide hearing protection whilst letting sound in at a comfortable level for the wearer, whilst recording environmental noise levels for corporate compliance.

A single button allowed users to turn the ear defenders on or off and adjust the amount of environmental noise coming through to the user from 4 presets of low, medium, high and none.

Further down is a behind the scenes look at the development and making of the Focus Lite.

“Forrest's sharp design sensibility and business-oriented approach is distinctive. He excels in rapidly iterating designs, a crucial skill for projects with tight deadlines. His involvement often proved vital in driving business and product launches.”

- Greg White, Hardware Lead

PEAK Noise Monitoring

In order to view all of the data captured by the Focus Lite, we developed a web app, aptly named PEAK (due to the peaks of noise captured).

Using BLE Bluetooth beacons mapped to a floor plan, EAVE could link noise recorded by it’s smart ear defenders to specific locations and users.

Passive protection

Alongside the development of the technology enhanced Focus Lite, Forrest developed a range of passive hearing protection to go alongside the existing product range.

EAve MKI

The MKI was an MVP (minimum viable product) built to validate the market need for the product and service that EAVE was developing.

The MKI had more features built into it, such as improved communication between workers, beam forming technology and finesses volume control via the dial on the side.

Lower down the page is a video documentary of a successful pilot program of the MKI.

Graphic Design

Alongside development of the core product; supporting media and collateral was created.

Used primarily to communicate directly with new users of the product, to educate on hearing loss, or as marketing material at trade shows.
